How to Get Your Learner's Licence in Botswana
Everything you need to know about applying for your provisional driving licence from the Department of Road Transport and Safety (DRTS).
1 Requirements
✅ Be at least 18 years old (16 for motorcycle Class A)
✅ Valid Omang (National ID) or passport for non-citizens
✅ Two recent passport-sized photographs
✅ Completed application form (DL1) from any DRTS office
✅ Eye test certificate from a registered optometrist
✅ Payment of the prescribed testing fee
2 Application Process

Hand in your completed DL1 form, photos, ID, and eye test certificate. Pay the testing fee.
You'll be given a test date. The theory test is computer-based and covers road signs, rules of the road, and vehicle controls.
You need a minimum of 26/30 (Class A, B, F, H) or 39/45 (Class C, C1, EB, EC, EC1). If you fail, you can re-apply after 14 days. Get our top test tips →
3 About the Theory Test
Format
Computer-based multiple-choice questions covering road signs, rules of the road, and vehicle controls.
Duration
Approximately 60 minutes to complete the entire test.
Pass Mark
Class B: 26 out of 30 correct answers (approximately 87%).
Re-test Policy
If unsuccessful, you must wait 14 days before re-applying.
