Driving Test Tips for Botswana

Expert tips to help you pass both the theory and practical driving tests in Botswana on your first attempt.

📝 Theory Test Tips

1. Know Every Road Sign

Road sign questions make up a significant portion of the test. Learn to distinguish between regulatory (must obey), warning (be alert), and informative (guidance) signs. Study all Botswana road signs here →

2. Understand Right-of-Way Rules

Know who has right of way at intersections, roundabouts, and four-way stops. Remember: at an uncontrolled intersection, yield to traffic on your right.

3. Study Following Distances

The 2-second rule in dry conditions and the 4-second rule in wet conditions are commonly tested. Know how stopping distance increases with speed.

4. Learn Speed Limits

Built-up areas: 60 km/h. Open roads: 120 km/h. School zones: 40 km/h. Always look for posted speed limits that override defaults.

5. Take Practice Tests Repeatedly

Repetition builds confidence and familiarity. Aim to consistently score above 90% in practice quizzes before sitting the real exam.

6. Read Questions Carefully

You have 60 minutes. Don't rush. Look for key words like "must", "may", "should not", and "always" — they change the meaning of the question.

🚗 Practical (K53) Test Tips

1. Master Your Mirror Checks

Check your rearview mirror every 5–8 seconds and before any manoeuvre: stopping, signalling, changing lanes, or approaching hazards.

2. Always Check Blind Spots

Look over your shoulder before signalling and again before turning or changing lanes. The automated system tracks these observations.

3. Use Push-Pull Steering

Keep both hands on the wheel in the "10 and 2" position. Use the push-pull method — never cross your arms. Don't turn the wheel while stationary.

4. Signal Early and Correctly

Signal well in advance (at least 50m before turning). Cancel your indicator after completing the manoeuvre.

5. Practice the Yard Test

The automated yard test uses sensors to assess your incline start and parallel parking. Practice until these manoeuvres feel natural.

6. Stay Calm on Test Day

Nerves are normal. Focus on driving as you practised. The examiner wants to see safe, confident driving — not perfection.
